According to a Bloomberg report, Amazon has denied reports by City AM proclaiming that the E-commerce website is looking to introduce Bitcoin as a payment option by year-end.
City AM, one of London’s business-oriented newspapers, reported on Monday that a company insider has revealed two business plans Amazon is looking to introduce in the latter half of 2021 and 2022. Firstly, to introduce Bitcoin as a payment option and secondly, to introduce its own cryptocurrency by 2022.
According to the report, the spokesperson said:
“Notwithstanding our interest in the space, the speculation that has ensued around our specific plans for cryptocurrencies is not true. We remain focused on exploring what this could look like for customers shopping on Amazon.”
The statement is in contrast with the City AM’s coverage wherein the insider revealed the project came down from Jeff Bezos himself.
The latest job position opening at Amazon might have played a role in intensifying the rumors. The job position seeks to hire a ‘Digital Currency and Blockchain Product Lead’.
The rumor set off a surge in cryptocurrencies, especially taking Bitcoin’s value to over $39000 against the USD after nearly 6 weeks.
