Washington: A website based in New Jersey has come under the spotlight of criticism by tampering a picture. In the picture a Sikh mayor is shown as a dancer in Arabia.
According to the American Market Report, the website Hudson Mile Square View broadcast a picture of Hoboken Mayor Ravinder Bhalla, which corresponds to the character played by British actor Sacha Baron Cohen in the comedy film The Dictator.
The photo was given with a story related to the increase in tax. It said that Bhalla is using all the powers of his post to increase the tax, which the city council has not approved.
According to the website, Bhalla proposed to increase the tax of three percent, which was reduced by the city council to one per cent.
Sikh activists have described the picture as racist.
Sikh Social Worker Simran Jeet Singh tweeted, “Ravi Bhalla is the first turbaned Sikh who has been elected the mayor in the history of America, he is always under threat by racist hooligans, he is called a terrorist and he and his family have received death threats! Now someone is tarnishing Ravi as a dictator by tampering with his picture, this act is racist and wrong.
Later, the website said that the picture was presented by a reader. Although the American market reported that the same website had used such a picture for Bhalla in August also.
