Eclipse introduces IBC-enabled rollup ‘Cascade’ to enhance security of cross-chain asset movement

IBC security model

On the 24th, Eclipse, a rollup technology provider, explained the importance of Inter-Blockchain Communication Protocol (IBC) and introduced the first IBC-enabled rollup project “Cascade”.

IBC is a communication standard that enables data transfer (asset transfer) between different blockchains. It is widely used within the Cosmos (ATOM) ecosystem, and at the time of writing it is used in 59 different networks based on the CosmosSDK. For example, projects like Osmosis and Stride can use IBC to coordinate decentralized trading and staking token liquidity with other blockchains. This will allow users to smoothly move data and assets on various blockchains.

IBC security has two main components. First, each blockchain must correctly execute its core protocol, and second, the light client must verify the data. Relayers acting as data forwarders are responsible for the correct delivery of messages, but otherwise there are no points of trust in the IBC.

This model contrasts with existing IBC-compatible bridge protocol Hyperlane and multi-chain bridge protocol Wormhole, which supports Solana (SOL) and Ethereum (ETH). These protocols require trust in the bridge operator’s network to ensure security.

The first IBC-enabled rollup being developed by Eclipse is Cascade, a rollup solution for Solana’s Sealevel Virtual Machine. Developers will be able to build Solana applications on Cascade and work seamlessly with the Cosmos ecosystem.

What is rollup

It is one of the technologies for aggregating and streamlining blockchain transactions. This allows a large number of transactions to be bundled into a single “rollup” transaction, greatly improving the scalability (processing power) of the blockchain.

Cascade is currently running on a Layer 1 blockchain testnet built with the CosmosSDK called Injective, with plans to migrate to mainnet soon.

Possibility of IBC-enabled rollup

Preparations are also underway to enable existing IBC relayers to work with Eclipse’s rollup technology. A further vision for the future is the planned decentralization of the validator network, which will allow different validator groups to participate.

Through its implementation of IBC, Eclipse aims to facilitate communication between different blockchain networks, expanding the reach of blockchain technology while maintaining security and decentralization.

Eclipse’s rollup concept can be applied not only to Cascade, but also to other rollup projects. Through application to blockchains other than Solana, the next-generation interchain rollup is expected to appear.

What is Cosmos SDK

A blockchain framework developed as part of the Cosmos ecosystem. A modular framework based on Tendermint, a consensus engine that guarantees data integrity and order on a distributed ledger, and IBC, making it easy to create custom blockchains.
