Will a decentralized SNS app be released?

US IT giant Meta (formerly Facebook) is considering releasing a distributed SNS app similar to Twitter.

Details are unclear as there is no official announcement at this time, but multiple overseas media such as Reuters have meta-confirmed that this content is true. On the other hand, it is not yet clear if it will actually launch.

The person in charge of Meta explained to the overseas media uniformly as follows.

We are considering releasing an independent decentralized SNS, the app of which can be used to share sentences.

We see potential in another area where creators and celebrities can share their latest interests in a timely manner.

According to the media “MoneyControl” who heard the contents from the information source, this application seems to be a mechanism to log in with personal information of Instagram. MoneyControl said it also confirmed internal Meta documents.

The source also revealed that the app will support the protocol “ActivityPub” of the decentralized social network “Mastodon”.

MoneyControl says it’s unclear if the project is still in the idea stage or if it’s already in development.

After the acquisition of Twitter by Mr. Elon Musk, it has been reported that management is unstable, such as large-scale restructuring, requests for long working hours, and suspension of advertising by major companies. Recently, the development of decentralized SNS is progressing, and the crypto asset (virtual currency) industry is also paying attention to SNS.

Will staff reductions be implemented again?

Meta is reported to be making another round of job cuts this week. The job cuts, which are expected to be in the thousands, were expected to take place as early as this week, according to Bloomberg sources.

The company changed its name from Facebook to Meta and shifted its focus to Metaverse. However, the Metaverse division, which was pushed forward as a corporate strategy, caused huge losses. Also, due to the rise of TikTok, the growth of the SNS sector has stagnated.

Meta was also reportedly planning to cut thousands of jobs in November last year.

What is the Metaverse

A multiplayer 3D virtual reality world built on the Internet. There are various ways to use it, such as playing games, participating in live music, and attending company meetings through avatars.

Blockchain is not necessarily used in the Metaverse, but it is said to be compatible with NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and cryptocurrencies.
