El Salvador’s president Nayib Bukele recently remarked that over half a million citizens of the country have downloaded the government-issued Bitcoin wallets.
The government has developed the digital wallet “Chivo” with the cooperation of the Mexican crypto-asset exchange Bitso following the declaration of Bitcoin as legal tender on September 7.
The news was announced by president Bukele on Monday where he wrote, “We currently have more than half a million users (of the Chivo wallet).”
The Chivo wallet offers $30 worth of Bitcoin upon downloading the app, a move to encourage the use of cryptocurrency.
In the Tweet, Bukele also acknowledged the technical errors in the wallet that occurred in the first few days of the launch. He said that 95% of the errors have been resolved and said that it would be fully operational within a few days.
