Global color authority the Pantone Color Institute has named a new blue shade, ‘PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri’, as the ‘Color of the Year’ for the year 2022.
However, unlike the past 22 years, the institute decided to manufacture a brand new color for the 2022 awards instead of awarding any pre-existing colors in its archive. What’s more, the ‘dynamic periwinkle’ color will be released via an NFT collection since the blueish color often represents technology.
The institute will mint the NFTs on the energy-efficient Tezos blockchain in collaboration with Paris-based multidisciplinary artist, Polygon1993, and each digital collectible will contain the new color.
Explaining the move, Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, said in the press release:
“Creating a new color for the first time in the history of our Pantone Color of the Year educational color program reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place. As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication and as a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red-violet-infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lie before us.”
