Ronaldinho Gaúcho became a defendant again in a lawsuit against 18K Ronaldinho, a company suspected of practicing a pyramid. This time, the former national team player was involved in a collective action brought by the Brazilian Institute for the Study and Defense of Consumer Relations (Ibedec) in Goiás. According to UOL, the value of the action is R $ 300 million.
This is the second time in a short time that the ex-player is involved in a lawsuit against 18K. At the beginning of the month, Gaúcho also became a defendant in a moral and material damages action in the amount of R $ 52.6 thousand, filed by a person from Paraná.
According to the report, Ibedec claimed to have identified 150 victims who were injured in Brazil and other countries, such as the United States, Portugal and Italy.
In the action, according to the website, besides the athlete, the directors and collaborators of the company Marcelo Lara Marcelino, Bruno Rodrigues Alcântara, Raphael Horácio Nunes de Oliveira and Athos Trajano da Silva are mentioned.
According to the Ibedec lawyer, the number of victims can reach close to a thousand because the process has become public. "I believe that the total number of victims will increase," said Fernando Henrique Barbosa, according to Valor Investe.
Ronaldinho: from witness to defendant
Until then – before these two processes, Ronaldinho Gaúcho had only been listed as a witness in the case.
This is because, in October last year, the São Paulo Public Prosecutor's Office had received a report of pyramid practice. It was from there that the company started to be investigated for offering yields of up to 2% a day.
At the time, the defender said he had his image exploited improperly. In fact, since the case came to light, the former player's lawyers have always contested his connection to 18K.
That same month, federal deputy Aureo Ribeiro (Solidariedade / RJ) requested the presence of Ronaldinho Gaúcho in the Chamber to participate in the discussions on the pyramid evidence at 18k.
Ribeiro is the author of the first Bill to regulate cryptocurrencies in Brazil – PL 2,303 / 2015 – and tries to approve a CPI of Cryptocurrencies.
Ronaldinho Gaúcho is one of the most harassed athletes in the world of sports due to his successful trajectory on the pitch and subsequent maintenance of his image. On Instagram alone, the athlete has 51 million followers.
Even the government sees in Ronaldinho the effectiveness in promoting actions. Also last year, he became a tourism ambassador in Brazil after being appointed by the special autarchy of the Ministry of Tourism, Embratur.
However, not always did their advertising contracts work, like this one from 18K, for example. Another company in the investment sector has also put the ace in bad shape.
In July last year, the Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM) ordered the suspension of Forex activities by LBLV, a company that also had the former player as a poster boy.
The regulator issued an alert after verifying that the LBLV would be promoting irregular customer acquisition for operations in the Forex market, which is prohibited in Brazil.
More recently, the ex-star of the national team became a poster boy for the Frente Corretora de Câmbio, a company that has a partnership with Ripple.
In 2018, Ronaldinho even ventured out trying to promote his own cryptocurrency that did not work. The RSCoin project (Ronaldinho Soccer Coin) foresaw several actions, such as the construction of digital stadiums and betting platforms.
