U.S. lawmakers remain concerned about Libra prospects after trip to Switzerland

Maxine Waters, chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Financial Services Committee, issued an official statement saying that the U.S. delegation had met with Swiss regulators and lawmakers to discuss the Libra project.

U.S. congressmen discussed issues related to the cryptocurrency initiative from Facebook with representatives of the State Secretariat for International Financial Affairs, the Commissioner of the Federal Data Protection Agency, and information, as well as the Swiss Financial Market Supervision Authority.

As previously reported, the purpose of the delegation’s visit was to exchange views on the Libra project and related regulatory issues. Following the meeting, Maxine Waters stated the following:

“I still have doubts about the ability of a large technology company to create a privately controlled alternative global currency”

She said Congress would continue to look into Libra-related issues, including anti-money laundering.

Earlier, Maxine Waters said that her department will continue to study in detail the features of the cryptocurrency initiative Libra.
