The trees were barely swaying on Thursday at Pebble Beach. On Day 1, Rickie was looking to make a mark. And that is just what he did. He has never won a major till date, and this bugs him a lot. Even though he states he doesn’t care about it and prefers his mind at ease.
During the first round of 119th U.S. Open, he played pretty well. Xander Schauffele, Louis Oosthuizen and Aaron Wise were all ahead along with Fowler at one point. But later on Thursday with a 65, Justin Rose was at the top of the leaderboard.
This is what Fowler had in mind after this round, “I’d love to get a major. It would be awesome if it was this week. We’re off to a good start. We’ve got a lot of work to do. But I said earlier in the week that whether I win a major or I don’t in my career, it’s not something that’s going to define me.”
Scott Piercy shot 67, whereas Piercy on a hot-streak laid birdies on holes 2, 4 and 5. Four including Rory McIlroy stood at 68 while Eight were at 69: Sergio Garcia, Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Graeme McDowell.
Fowler has won five PGA Tour titles till date. This is the 39th major of his and he looks to be a champion as he is immensely hungry to be at the top once again.
