Kristina Mladenovic, the girlfriend of Dominic Thiem, will make the first big surprise of this year’s edition at the US Open at Flushing Meadows on Monday.
The 26-year-old Frenchwoman defeated 14-seeded German Angelique Kerber 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 in the first round, inflicting the third early Grand Slam defeat this season on the former world number one after Paris (1st round) and Wimbledon (2nd round).
In 2016, Kerber won the TITLE at the US Open.
French Open winner Ashleigh Barty beat Kazakh Sarina Dijas 1:6.6:3.6:2 after 1:42 hours and a weak first set.
Last year’s quarter-finalist has played her way to number one in the WTA rankings, including a quarter-final at the Australian Open, the title at Roland Garros and the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. She also has excellent chances to replace Japan’s Naomi Osaka at the top after the US Open.
Barty became the first Australian in 46 years to win a Grand Slam title at Roland Garros. She now meets the American Lauren Davis.
